The latest phase of the quest to develop the best ergonomic chair in the world was really kicked off when Herman Miller released the Aeron chair back in the ‘90s.
The arrival of the Aeron coincided with the IT revolution and the increasing prominence of computer-based work, which further enhanced the demand for ergonomic chairs. While there’s still no definitive answer as to which is the best ergonomic chair, we’d like to present our thoughts on the matter.
How Do You Determine The Best Ergonomic Chair?
To this date, there’s still really no such thing as one chair that’s absolutely perfect for everyone. The best ergonomic chair really depends on the characteristics of the individual that will be using it, from body type, to required work tasks, to personal preferences.
Here are our thoughts as to which high quality ergonomic chairs offer a good fit for certain groups.
Best Ergonomic Chair – For Recliners – The Humanscale Freedom Chair
If you like to recline a lot, the Freedom chair has you covered, provided you use the optional headrest. Even in other quality ergonomic chairs, it can be difficult to recline and at the same time continue to work without interruption or discomfort. The Freedom fixes this problem, which should be great news for reclining enthusiasts.
Of course, reclining is about more than just feeling relaxed. Studies have shown that reclining, rather than sitting up straight, provides more relief and prevention for individuals who have suffered from lower back pain. Our full review of the Freedom can be found here.
Best Ergonomic Chair – Drafting Chairs – The Steelcase Think Chair
A drafting chair is, not surprisingly, a must for people involved in design-related professions. Many of the high quality ergonomic chairs we’ve seen are available in drafting versions or have separate, optional drafting kits which make them appropriate for this type of use. One of the challenges sometimes presented by drafting chairs is that they can be particularly difficult to adjust effectively. The Steelcase Think chair, with its easy adjustability, solves this problem. This is why we feel that the drafting version of the Think is the best ergonomic drafting chair. Read our full review of the Think here.
While the Herman Miller Aeron is frequently described as a noted status symbol of the dot-com era, Herman Miller really raised the bar on luxury with the introduction of the Embody. For one thing, the Embody is one of the most stylish ergonomic chairs on the market. More importantly, though, it is unbelievably comfortable. This is one chair that truly has to be sat in to be believed. It comes at a premium price point, but for those who don’t mind spending the money, the Embody is without peer in this respect. You can read more in our full review of the Embody here.
Best Ergonomic Chair – Overall – The Steelcase Leap Chair
The Steelcase Leap is strong in every area. The thing that we feel makes it the very best chair, though, is that it is the most adjustable chair on the market. The Leap can accommodate virtually every body type and position. You can find out more about how impressed we are and why it is considered the with the best ergonomic chair, in the Leap full review here.
